Dean Gaskell signs new contract with the Vikings

DEAN Gaskell’s love for Widnes Vikings and his belief the future is still bright at Stobart Stadium Halton prompted the Ireland winger to sign a new two-year contract.

The 25-year-old has been a standout player this season and was eager to continue his association with the club.

“I really enjoy everything about Widnes – I’m not just a player but a fan as well, as is my girlfriend,” he said.

“Everyone at the club has been good to me and I’m very happy to commit my future to the club for the next two seasons.

“The recent Super League decision was disappointing for everyone but we still have a lot to play for this season and the future is certainly bright at the Stobart Stadium Halton.”

Widnes’ official Stobart Players of the Year awards dinner next month will double as a send-off for the club’s World Cup stars.

Being held in conjunction with The Lady Vikings at Stobart Stadium Halton on Friday, September 5 it will feature various player awards plus supporter and community awards.

John Stankevitch, Vikings’ assistant coach, is guest speaker for an event compered by Malcolm Lord.

All first-team players are attending and there will be interviews with club chairman Steve O’Connor, sporting director Terry O’Connor and head coach Steve McCormack.

The evening includes a three-course meal, entertainment from a live band plus a community auction of sports memorabilia.

Tickets at £45 per person or £395 for a table of 10 are available from the main stadium reception, online at the club website or by ringing 0844 2495113.

A six-figure sum has sealed a deal for The Co-operative to extend their backing of the National Leagues for a further year.

It means the Manchester-based group will continue as title sponsor until the end of the 2009 season.

Liz Matkin, The Co-operative’s sponsorship manager, said: “We are committed to Rugby League and see this as part of our long-term plans to be involved in the sport.”

Vikings boss Steve McCormack has strengthened his Scotland coaching team for this year’s Rugby League World Cup in Australia.

Angus McNab, head coach of Scotland Amateurs, has joined the Scottish head coach’s backroom team.

McCormack said: “Angus was a valuable member of the staff for the qualifying match against Wales last year and this gives him the opportunity to develop further as a coach.”
